Israel has sent ground forces into the Gaza Strip after a week of air strikes to try to halt rocket attacks by Palestinian militants.
Israeli troops were reported to be engaged in heavy clashes with Hamas fighters in northern Gaza.
Earlier, Israel intensified air and artillery attacks on the territory.
The UN secretary general has called on Israel to halt its ground assault immediately. An emergency meeting of the Security Council is under way.
Witnesses say Israeli military convoys crossed into northern Gaza at four separate points after nightfall on Saturday. They were supported by attack helicopters.
